A Dose of Equine Bodywork Medicine for Myself
February 7, 2022
So last week I had a wonky 'bad-hair' sort of day where I just laid around like a lazy bum and wasn't feeling my best. God knows why this happens, but it did. The next day my back went out so bad, I could barely walk or stand at times. All that sitting around did me no good.
Once in a blue moon my back goes out... it happened a week before my Certification Completion Course which really through me for a loop! I rescheduled and certified 2 months later, but that was rough, psychologically. Anyway, my back has been pretty healthy for the last year or so, but last week, it went out worse than ever. Which is actually a good lesson for me in self-care and awareness.
So I've been trying to both heal it, and figure out what in the world triggered it so I can prevent it in the future. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of factors, but let's cut to the chase.
One of the factors is that I have a standing desk and I noticed that I hyperextend my knee and hip joint when standing at my desk! Doh!
I found this interesting page on ways to consciously alter this habitual pattern and instead, "lift the knee cap" to straighten the leg.
I also WALK daily and discovered that I need to STRETCH more - hams, extensors, and glutes especially.
Do you have suggestions for ways to keep your back healthy?
